Description
October 4, 2025: Alanna Lecher, assistant dean and associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, was recently awarded the Changemaking Education Award for her citizenship project class. Her course focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. It included projects related to hurricane resilience, as well as the preservation of cultural resources. This award is given to faculty with exemplary service-learning courses by a coalition of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida, Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year Coalition and the Armando Alejandre Jr. Memorial Foundation.
From the program: Alanna Lecher, Lynn University: Professor Lecher’s DJCP 100: Citizenship Project course is focused on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Included in this goal are targets related to resilience to natural disasters and preservation of cultural heritage sites. After experiencing two hurricanes in the fall semester, many for the first time, her students decided to create a hurricane guide for their fellow students. This guide explains what happens at Lynn in the event of a hurricane and what the students’ choices are. It’s designed to be shared with students at Lynn in advance of a hurricane. In addition students completed service related to preservation of cultural heritage. They cleaned, identified, and cataloged artifacts from the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. This was a need as the current staff at the site were too overwhelmed to take on this project. They also completed training to become Heritage Monitoring Scouts, which is a state program that tracks the impact of climate change, development, and looting on cultural heritage sites. After becoming certified, students completed a status assessment of a cemetery, which they submitted to a state database.
