Abstract
This book is divided into two sections: one for Chemistry I and one for Chemistry II. In Part I, the text provides an experimental exploration of fundamental concepts of chemistry. Lab activities cover topics found in the first semester of general chemistry: measurement of mass and volume, experimental data, physical and chemical processes, mixture separation, properties of water, simple chromatography, reaction stoichiometry, copper reactions, oxidation-reduction of metals, acid-base chemistry, and examining plastics as models of polar and non-polar molecules.
Part II serves as a supplement to Chemistry I. Lab activities cover topics found in the second semester of general chemistry: chromatography techniques, analysis based on stoichiometry, reactions of solids, colorimetry, oxidation-reduction of metals, acid-base chemistry and pH titrations, and kinetics and thermochemistry of combustion. Several experiments specifically build on concepts introduced in the first semester of chemistry lecture and lab (SCI 130). The goal is to equip students for subsequent science lab work in chemistry, biology, or environmental studies. Courses: SCI 130x and SCI 131x
