Abstract
While not describing personality disorders Adler did provide a unique system for understanding personality based on the concepts of movement and activity. This presentation highlights a model for diagnosing and treating personality disorders based on Adler’s understanding of movement and activity. It is both clinically useful and compatible with DSM-5.
Participants will be able to define the pressing need to quickly and accurately diagnose and treat personality disorders per DSM-5.
Participants will be able to describe Adler’s view of personality—movement, social interest, and activity, his initial typology, and its evolution to the four types of movement and two levels of activity.
Participants will be able to describe the personality style/disorders matrix based on movement and activity as it relates to maladaptive and adaptive patterns. Illustrate it with clinical examples.
Participants will be able to describe how to conceptualize and plan treatment based on this matrix and pattern.
