Abstract
Robert Watson, distinguished professor of American history, is working with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to offer a series of lectures on the play To Kill a Mockingbird.
Watson trained teachers and developed curriculum guides for area schools attending the series. Additionally, he is offering "talk back" sessions about civil rights history for audiences and season ticket holders.
In this YouTube video, Dr. Watson discusses Harper Lee’s masterpiece and how “To Kill A Mockingbird” is a story that is still relevant in today’s social climate. Written at a time where segregation and racialism were an accepted part of the American social fabric, the story reflects the injustices happening around the time of the Great Depression.
Dr. Watson compares figures from the book to figures of today, and demonstrates how racism and racialism are still at work in modern society. He highlights a recurring theme in the book: That things are not always what they seem, and one should lead with kindness or risk destroying that which is innocent.
