Plato's Mathematics and His Theory of Forms

Research output: Contribution to conferenceLecture

Abstract

Dr. Sophia Stone, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, gave two talks for the Boston Area Colloquium for Ancient Philosophy (BACAP) at Assumption University. The BACAP was founded in 1978 to invite global scholars to lecture to local philosophers and classicists to foster community dialogue.

Stone's 40 minute evening lecture was presented to members of the BACAP, scholars in Ancient Philosophy and the students who attended the undergraduate seminar. The paper argues for the controversial position that the most charitable reading of Plato's metaphysics is to interpret the maths used in his proofs as mathematical intermediates, intelligible objects that are between (metaxu) Forms and sendibles.
