Abstract

Substance use disorders are a persistent and enduring pattern of substance use despite the presence of significant cognitive, behavioral, and or physiological problems related to usage. This chapter reviews five such DSM-5-TR substance use disorders: alcohol use disorder, cannabis use disorder, sedative, hypnotic, or anxiolytic use disorder, stimulant use disorder, and opioid use disorder. It describes these disorders in terms of clinical presentations, related factors, DSM-5-TR criteria, Adlerian conceptualizations, and treatment considerations. Case examples illustrate these features for each disorder.
