The Psychological Myth Project: Research and Application

This Psychological Myth Project is a research-based “mythbusting” project in which students write a research paper related to a particular psychological myth (e.g., “Hands-free devices provide a safe way to talk on the phone while driving.”), complete a study collecting data about the myth from the general public, evaluate how the myth is portrayed by media sources, develop materials to decrease misconceptions, and present their project to the class through poster presentations. This semester-long research-based learning project requires students to use peer-reviewed research to evaluate the myth, with the goal of correcting misperceptions while also increasing critical thinking and information literacy skills.
