Abstract

Dr. Sophia Stone, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, gave two talks for the Boston Area Colloquium for Ancient Philosophy (BACAP) at Assumption University. The BACAP was founded in 1978 to invite global scholars to lecture to local philosophers and classicists to foster community dialogue.

Stone's first talk, presented during the undergraduate seminar, explored two geometry problems in Plato's Meno. The presentation for students in the undergraduate seminar part of the BACAP prepares the student to understand the evening lecture given to the BACAP. Dr. Stone went through both geometry problems in Plato's Meno. The first demonstration used origami paper, Professor Stone calls it "Socratic origami" where the students followed along by folding origami paper. The second proof we looked at various diagrams and discussed the complexity of the second problem to the first.
